ActionAIDS: 2005 in Review

In 2005 ActionAIDS served over 4,000 individuals and families living with HIV disease.

Services included Case Management, Prevention Case Management, Complementary Therapy, Housing counseling, food deliveries, Mental Health Treatment, Volunteer Buddy Services, direct Educational Presentation and Outreach.

In addition we have provided Information and Referral service to over 8,000 individuals and have been able to reach countless people with educational presentations and public awareness messages through media appearances and public events.

In our 19th year of service to the community, ActionAIDS continued to join with people living with HIV and their loved ones to help them cope with the effects of HIV disease. Our goal continues to be to help support and sustain the quality and dignity of their lives. Services provided include Case Management, Family Case Management, Perinatal Program, Prison Linkage, Assistant Case Management, Volunteer Buddy Program Prevention Services, Housing Services (including Housing Counseling and Casa Nueva Vida), Mental Health Therapy Complementary Therapies, , Positive Action- Employment Services, Support Groups, Youth Program, and Immediate Seating.

In 2005 we continued to work in partnership with our clients, providers and funding entities to provide high quality client centered services. We had significant success with a CDC Social Network demonstration project. Our Volunteer Buddy program continued to grow and flourish. Our Development Department explored new venues to bring much needed resources to the organization. We welcomed a new CFO, David Wagstaff, who has brought new and fresh energy and ideas to the Finance Department and the organization.

In 2005 Casa Nueva Vida was fully operational. We have worked in partnership with residents at Casa Nueva Vida to help build a community of support and care in North Philadelphia for people with HIV disease. Our work has connected us in new ways to our clients and has helped us to have an increased sensitivity and understanding for the many obstacles they face in their day to day lives. We have learned a great deal and continue to build community with CNV residents.

In 2005 we secured a new contract with the City of Philadelphia Office of Emergency Shelter and Services to provide scattered site permanent housing subsidies for 10 one bedroom and 5 two bedroom apartments. The contract begins in January, 2006.

In 2005 we worked in collaboration with St. Mary’s Respite Care and Mazzonni Center in a joint fund raising effort, the 2005 Ride for Hope. We were honored to have as “Bike Rider Number 1”the Mayor of Philadelphia, John Street. The Mayor finished his ride in record time and has already pledged to ride with us again next year!

In 2005 Kevin Conare resigned from the position of Executive Director of ActionAIDS and we welcomed Kevin Burns as the new Executive Director. The transition has been an opportunity to reflect back on our history, honor the many contributions made by Kevin Conare and previous staff, as well as to look to the future with the renewed hope and enthusiasm.

In 2005 Charles Engel, a founding member of ActionAIDS, a long time Board member, support Group Facilitator, Buddy Team Leader, devoted Buddy Volunteer and a dear friend to all of us, passed away. We came together as a community at St. Luke and the Epiphany Episcopal Church to celebrate Charles’ life. Hundreds of people bore testimony to his advocacy, vision, and pioneer spirit in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In 2005 we had successes and challenges. We celebrated accomplishments and mourned losses. Through it all we continued to work to provide the best possible services to individuals and families living with HIV disease. We are thankful to all of you who have joined us in working toward achieving our Mission. We look forward to a productive 20th year of service to the HIV community.

Information from Financial Statements for the Year ending June 30, 2005

WHERE WE SPENT THE DOLLARS

2005 Expenditures
An ActionAIDS core value is accountability. We believe in accountability to our clients, volunteers, staff and donors. Each year, our audited financial statements are completed in a timely manner and published.

In 2005 our Development and Administrative costs combined accounted for 12% of our total costs- 88 cents of every dollar went directly to services. While our revenues decreased from $5.9 million in 2004 to $4.9 million in 2005, due to our construction budget for Casa Nueva Vida, in 2005 we served more clients and provided more units of services than ever before.

We could not have achieved this without our community partners and donors, our dedicated volunteers and skilled staff. Your dedication to out mission makes it possible for ActionAIDS to continue to meet the challenges of this pandemic. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the HIV community.
